Island Life - Cycling in Cyprus

Exploring Cyprus: An Ideal Destination for Cyclists

Earlier this year we moved to Cyprus. There were a fair few bits that were unknown but we were excited for the adventure, and if it didn't work out we could always move back home.

Nestled in the eastern Mediterranean, this island is a treasure trove of natural beauty, rich history, and, to my delight, incredible cycling opportunities. For cycling enthusiasts, Cyprus offers a diverse range of routes and landscapes, making it a paradise for adventurers on two wheels.

The Allure of Cyprus for Cyclists

Cyprus boasts a favorable climate, with mild winters and warm, sunny summers, making it an ideal destination for year-round cycling, although the summer can be at times be a little on the hot side! The island’s varied terrain, from coastal paths to mountainous trails, caters to all levels of cyclists, whether you're a beginner seeking leisurely rides or an experienced rider looking for challenging climbs. Not to mention some of the mountain bike and gravel routes available.

Exploring Coastal Routes

One of the first things I did upon moving to Cyprus was to explore the coastal routes. The island's coastline is dotted with charming villages, secluded beaches, and historical landmarks. Riding along the coastal roads, with the Mediterranean Sea glistening to one side and picturesque landscapes on the other, is an unforgettable experience.

The route from Zygi to Larnaca is particularly stunning. It offers a mix of smooth roads and breathtaking views, passing through quaint villages.

Conquering the Troodos Mountains

For those seeking more challenging terrain, the Troodos Mountains are a must-visit. The Troodos range is the largest mountain range in Cyprus, offering a network of trails that wind through pine forests, rugged landscapes, and charming mountain villages.

One of the most popular routes is the climb to Mount Olympus, the highest peak in Cyprus. The ascent is demanding, with steep gradients and hairpin bends, but the reward at the summit is worth it. The panoramic views of the island are nothing short of spectacular. I was fortunate to do this a few years ago and is on the list for the future.

Cycling through the Troodos Mountains also provides an opportunity to explore traditional villages like Amargeti, which also boasts a local winery as well. I cycled there recently and the hills near killed me!

Off-Road Adventures

Cyprus is not just about road cycling; it also offers excellent opportunities for mountain biking. The Akamas Peninsula, located in the northwest, is a haven for off-road enthusiasts. Its rugged terrain, lush forests, and coastal cliffs provide an exhilarating backdrop for mountain biking adventures.

The Adonis Trail and the Aphrodite Trail are two popular routes in the Akamas region. These trails offer a mix of challenging climbs, technical descents, and stunning views of the coastline. The Akamas Peninsula is also home to diverse flora and fauna, making it a paradise for nature lovers. Although I have not done much off-road cycling, it is certainly on the list!

Moving to Cyprus has opened up a world of cycling adventures. The island's diverse landscapes, favorable climate, and rich cultural heritage make it an ideal destination for cyclists. Whether you're exploring coastal routes, conquering mountain climbs, or embarking on off-road adventures, Cyprus has something to offer every cycling enthusiast. Keep an eye out for my next cycling adventure out here in sunny Cyprus!
